    Trekking tours usually last several days and take place away from civilization. Therefore, a trekking backpack is an important part of the equipment. The volume of trekking backpacks varies between 50 and 95 litres, depending on which route is planned. The big brother of a hiking backpack is an ideal companion for self-suppliers and can easily take camping stoves, sleeping bags and food. The best trekking backpacks are equipped with an ergonomic carrying system to minimize the strain on shoulders and back. In general, the weight of the fully loaded trekking backpack should not exceed ¼ of your body weight. The maximum load for men is 20 kg, for women 15 kg. Also note the weight of the backpack: most versions weigh around two kilos.

    As a rule, women's backpacks for trekking have a maximum capacity of 70 litres. Large backpacker models are an exception: many of them have a capacity of an astonishing 95 litres, and sometimes even more! For your orientation: models with a volume of 50 to 60 litres are recommended for a one-week trips. Backpacks with a storage capacity of 65 to 75 litres are ideal for a week of outdoor trekking or multi-day hiking tours in cold regions. Models with a capacity of 80 litres or more are suitable for a trekking tour of several weeks or a world trip. In any case, particularly robust materials that can withstand the high load are in demand. Even cheap trekking backpacks usually consist of light and hard-wearing materials, such as nylon or polyester.

    Typical features

    Usually, trekking backpacks have a three-part structure: They consist of a cover, bottom and main compartment. The cover compartment is intended for small items such as sun lotion. Height adjustable versions can be used to clamp a jacket. Some cover compartments are designed as removable bags. An integrated document-compartment on the inside of the cover belongs to the standard equipment. The main compartment is the largest one in a trekking rucksack. The smaller bottom compartment is designed for shoes, down clothing or sleeping bag. Classic trekking backpacks are designed as top-loaders, so they have access from above.

    The carrying system consists of a padded hip belt (sometimes with a zip or smartphone compartment), padded, wide shoulder straps and contact or mesh back. The hip belt and shoulder straps shift the weight from shoulders to the hips, ensuring high carrying comfort and maximum freedom of movement. The carrying system with a mesh features a tensioned net insert at the back, which creates a space between the back and the backpack and thus ensures better air circulation. Trekking rucksacks with ventilation mesh have a characteristic curve in the back; this makes them less easy to pack, but especially comfortable for warm and tropical destinations. They are usually equipped with ventilated shoulder and hip straps. Models with contact backs are best trekking backpacks for longer tours in difficult terrain. The padded back lies close to the body and provides high stability. That is why they are also very suitable for heavy loads.

    Side compression straps are standard for all models. If the trekking backpack is not completely filled, its contents can be compressed and pulled closer to the back for better weight transfer. Adjustable load distribution belts on the shoulder straps also ensure optimal weight balance of the contents. This is why they are synonymously called load control straps: they work best at an angle between 30° to 60° to the horizontal. The chest strap contributes to stability by fixing the two shoulder straps and preventing them from slipping. Attachment loops and holders are also common. They allow you to attach your equipment comfortably without having to take off the trekking backpack. The same principle applies to integrated hydration systems – no breaks are necessary for drinking.

    Other features of a trekking backpack include a signal whistle, which is attached to either the shoulder or chest strap, and a removable rain cover. Special flight covers protect the backpack during baggage handling at the airport. Space-saving pack bags are also available separately: they create more organization inside the backpack. Some trekking backpacks are equipped with a compact, removable daypack.

    How to determine the correct size of a trekking backpack

    The trekking backpack has to be adjusted to your back length. To determine it, you should measure the distance from the upper edge of the shoulder blades or the slightly protruding seventh cervical vertebra to the upper edge of the hip bone. There is also a connection to your clothing size. In general, S corresponds to a back length of approx. 46 cm, size M fits a back of approx. 51 cm; L and XL are approx. 56 cm and more than 56 cm long respectively. The measured / determined values can be divided into three categories. Short is a length of 40 to 49 cm (i.e. size S), medium is 50 to 57 cm (M and L), while long backs come to 58 to 69 cm (XL). The length of the back serves as a basis for choosing the right backpack. Most outdoor brands state this value on the label. Adjustable back systems (mainly unisex models) can be adapted to different back lengths. Special models for women are available for several years. The trekking backpack for women is characterized by a shorter back, closer, strongly padded shoulder straps and a higher positioned chest strap. Also typical are conically shaped hip straps for a comfortable fit. In addition to the anatomically correct shape, every trekking backpack for women impresses with its attractive design and many colours.

    How to adjust the trekking backpack correctly

    For an optimal load distribution and back-friendly transport, you should adjust your trekking backpack correctly before starting the trip. It is essential that the backpack is already loaded – and it should be evenly loaded. To adjust the trekking backpack, first loosen all straps of the carrying system – shoulder straps, hip straps and chest strap. The hip belt is placed first, as it carries 70 to 80 percent of the total load. To do this, shoulder the rucksack, bend forward slightly and place the hip straps centrally over the upper edge of the hip bones. After you have closed the buckle, pull the belt tight enough to make it fit firmly but comfortably. In an upright position, the shoulder straps are now adjusted into position: The beginnings of the straps should be centred on the shoulder blades. You can then use the load control straps to make fine adjustments. Finally, close the chest strap. Its correct position is just below the collarbone. A correctly adjusted trekking rucksack does not limit movements, so ideally you should not bump the back of your head against the cover compartment at every step. Extra tip: Vary between different adjustment options during the tour in order to reduce the strain on the areas under load – hips and shoulders – and prevent the muscles from tiring prematurely.
