Leather backpacks: popular materials and their properties

Not all types of leather are the same! The different sorts have their own special features. Most backpacks are made of cowhide. It is very strong and hard-wearing and is usually obtained as a leftover product from the food industry. If your leather backpack is made of calfskin, it features a finer grain and higher tear resistance. Buffalo leather is known for its pleasant feel but is one of the most delicate types. The leather backpack made from lambskins is characterized by a particularly smooth surface and soft feel but is less robust than other types of leather. Leather backpacks weigh up to two kilograms: goatskin is considered a particularly light material. It is thin and at the same time very hard-wearing. That is why it is one of the most valuable types of leather. Regardless of the sort you choose, you can expect every genuine leather backpack to be very durable. This means that the leather backpacks are also sustainable.

Every leather backpack is unique due to the natural properties of the material. Over time, it also develops a beautiful patina that emphasizes the individual character. Backpacks made of the so-called pull-up leather or fat leather, which consists of cowhides as standard, develop this characteristic layer particularly quickly. These marks of use tell your story and are quite intentional. Another distinction concerns the structure. Whether smooth, suede or patent leather, the surface finish depends, among other things, on the style. While smooth leather has a classic and clean look, suede oscillates between casual and pithy, depending on how pronounced the effect is. A laptop leather backpack usually has a smooth surface to emphasize the professional impression. A compact leather backpack with a roughened finish is usually a women's backpack that is a good substitute for a handbag. Similarly, patent leather backpacks are mostly women's models intended for city use. Embossing and braiding are also classic types of surface treatment for a leather backpack for women: the selection here ranges from an animalistic Croco print to an elaborate diamond pattern made of two diagonally interwoven leather strips.

A vegan leather backpack: Is it a genuine leather model?

Admittedly, the term vegan leather is somewhat misleading. It combines two terms that are actually exclusive to each other. Vegan means a complete absence of animal components, so a vegan leather backpack is not a classic genuine leather model. Most variants contain innovative plant fibres or synthetic materials that look similar to real leather but are completely free of animal products. Based on the visual similarity, these materials are called vegan leather.
