    Cabin luggage, carry-on baggage, hand luggage, carry-on luggage goes by many names and generally stands for the luggage items that can be taken into the passenger area of the plane. In addition to cabin suitcases, it also includes travel bags, pilot cases, backpacks, weekender bags and garment bags. Hybrid luggage forms, such as a board trolley with backpack function, allow greater flexibility and can be adapted depending on the situation. Expandable models also impress with their adaptability and provide more storage space when needed. Carry-on luggage is intended for short trips of up to 4 days. It offers several advantages compared with check-in luggage. For example, you avoid long waiting at the check-in counter on departure and at the baggage carousel after landing. Carry-on baggage is of course also suitable for short car trips and bus or train journeys. However, because its dimensions are adapted to the plane cabin, it is called cabin luggage. The synonym hand luggage indicates that these pieces of luggage are relatively light and can therefore also be carried in the hand.

    Whether hardside or softside luggage, a board trolley features two or four wheels and an adjustable telescopic handle, making it the most popular flight companion. It is easy to pull and can be hand-carried over stairs or difficult terrain thanks to additional handles. If your flight is subject to strict weight regulations, please note that fabric suitcases are usually quite a bit lighter than hardside suitcases. Depending on your destination, you should also consider the humidity and/or weather conditions at your location when looking for a new cabin luggage. If you do check in your cabin suitcase, officials can use a universal key to open it and inspect the contents without having to break it up.     Carry-on luggage: What dimensions and weight are permitted?

    There is a special tray above the seats for cabin luggage. Smaller luggage, such as backpacks or travel bags, can be stowed under the seat. Special rules apply in particular seat rows, such as at the emergency exit: here, all cabin baggage must be stored in the overhead compartments. To avoid flying luggage and injuries in the event of turbulence, there are specific dimensions and weight regulations for hand luggage. Most airlines use the IATE (International Air Transport Association) guidelines as a basis. According to these guidelines, a cabin suitcase may not be larger than 55 x 40 x 20 cm. As a general rule, the total dimensions should not exceed 115 cm (width x height x depth). Important: The wheels, handles, side pockets etc. are included in these measurements. Other hand luggage dimensions concern foldable garment bags: they may not exceed 57 x 54 x 15 cm. As for the weight, according to IATE guidelines, your carry-on luggage should not weigh more than eight kilos. However, many airlines allow heavier baggage as long as it meets the dimensions, and you can lift and carry it on your own. It is best to check with your airline before flying. Some companies have different carry-on luggage regulations, depending on the ticket price, departure city, etc. Tip: Carry-on luggage is usually checked for the correct size before boarding with the help of a metal box. If you know the specifications of your airline, you can check your cabin baggage yourself using a suitable paper box. Remember that wheels and handles must also fit inside! If your cabin suitcase does not meet all hand luggage dimensions or specifications, it may only be flown as check-in luggage for a fee.

    Carry-on luggage: What is allowed and what can I take on board?

    You must carry certain things in your cabin luggage, for example, valuables, including devices such as mobile phones and medicines. Technology that contains rechargeable batteries should generally be taken into the cabin. This means your camera and drone also belong in your cabin suitcase. Other technical devices such as power banks, electric shavers or hairdryers are also best kept in your hand luggage. Particularly practical in this regard are cabin suitcases with an integrated USB port or built-in power bank. That way, you don't need to take any additional devices with you. Liquids up to 100 ml should also be carried in a transparent bag in your cabin suitcase. Some cabin cases have a removable bag for liquids. Many items are prohibited in carry-on luggage aboard a plane. These are mostly explosive chemical substances and items similar to weapons or items that can be used as a weapon, such as hair dye, knitting needles, ice picks, golf clubs, etc. They may only be transported as check-in baggage.
