This leather alternative consists of polyurethane, recycled polyester and vegetable oil. The PU leather is water-based polyurethane that is free of solvents. This is not only safer but also more sustainable because energy and water consumption are lower than with traditional methods. Thanks to this combination, a Stella McCartney bag made of this material has a Nappa leather look without the use of animal hides. A special fabric called Fur Free Fur made of polyester or an alternative made of modacrylic serves as a substitute for real fur. Both look deceptively real and can be found on some Stella McCartney bags. The backpacks in the Stella McCartney range are mainly made from recycled nylon. Some belt bags are also made of this material. The lining of Stella McCartney bags consists mainly of recycled polyester.

Stella McCartney: The brand of a fashion activist

The daughter of ex-Beatle Paul McCartney was practically born with her principles. Her parents were strict vegetarians and activists for the environment. Stella McCartney grew up on an organic farm, so leather or fur was never an option for her label, which she founded in 2001. Before that, she graduated from the renowned Central Saint Martins fashion school in London and gained her first experience with other brands. As one of the first high fashion designers, she rigorously avoided animal skins in the production of her bags and accessories - right from the start. Environmentally friendly manufacturing is just as important to Stella McCartney: that is why the label is constantly looking for new materials and innovative production methods. The British designer has received several awards for her commitment, including the Green Designer of the Year Award in 2008. Of course, Stella McCartney bags and fashion are also convincing in terms of design, for example, she was awarded British Designer of the Year in 2012.
